If you are using your mobile walkie talkies on a climb up a tough mountain or in a sand-and-water situation, you probably radio ought to pay more because you are asking the radio to give you hazardous duty performance. If you just need something to entertain the kids as they play in the backyard technology or you need to keep in touch while mobile you and your family members are in different ends of the mall, the less expensive radio and technology units will do. So the first thing to consider is "What will my radios be used for?" the radios I might need would probably cost $1,000.00 apiece. My own portable walkie talkies were bought to help mountain climbers on moderate mountains communicate with each other, so I bought units that cost about $250.00 apiece. But you can get perfectly servicable portable 2-way radios for light duty at 1/10 of that mobile cost. So need/price is the first thing to think about. The physical radio casing of the radio can be an technology issue depending on whether the radio is for the wife''s purse, or for mobile us butch fishermen radio and hunters whose equipment is subject to jostling and knocking technology around. In the outback hunting, fishing and rockclimbing mobile venues, don''t rule out Walkie-Talkies-- radio the units are usually less expensive technology and just as well made. In remote areas interference is highly unlikely, and the squelch can be set just high enough to allow only your immediate user groups participation mobile and radio in more populated areas. The subjects of technology intermodulation, transmit/receive mobile audio, etc. can for the moment radio be set aside inasmuchas these questions are of little concern technology to the casual hobbiest. The "rubber ducky" antenna that comes with these mobile radios is the LEAST efficient antenna. But there are extensible "gain" antennas that can be had, even though they are a little bit clunky in active radio environments. If you are going to be in difficult terrain, or say you want to transmit from car to car, 440 Mhz antennas are available from many sources, notably, and with a simple adaptor you can connect your FRS technology rig to a mobile magnetic mount antenna on the roof of your vehicles. A few radio years ago when we were experimenting with these low-power radios, we purchased a simple mast and tripod from and put up a small ground plain vertical antenna at our base camp at an elevation of about 16 technology feet above ground--that installation VASTLY improved the quality of our audio and the distance of the communication. Here are some questions and tips to consider if you plan to get FRS radios: mobile How often do you plan to use the radios radio for? If it is only going to be used for limited purposes, you might save some money and get a scaled down model. If however you plan to use them extensively, a few extra bucks up front may make you a happier camper. For extensive users, also consider the battery used to power the FRS radio - you might want to get a model that uses rechargeable batteries, otherwise you will spend some extra money for batteries technology.
